It's a good introductory story. Your Ensign Tapper must have some incredible patience, as it would get on my last friggin' nerve to have to put up with people constantly remarking that I looked too thin.

Of course, IRL I do not have that problem...

I'd like to think that Starfleet personnel would have social tolerance drilled into them from day one. I should send you a copy of "Dunsel", which has much the same theme...

I'd like to think that Starfleet personnel would have social tolerance drilled into them from day one.
Which might actually make it even harder for them to put up with people who aren't being socially tolerant. Being tolerant of other cultures doesn't necessarily mean accepting their intolerance of you. But I do agree that Starfleet officers would be highly trained to avoid reacting badly in such situations.

i agree. in one of my stories the culture has a deep intense xenophobia (similiar to iran/north korea) to the extent that the anthropologists have military escorts to make sure nothing classified (state or business secrets) is told during the interview. the starfleet trained anthropologists handle it rather well. the civilian interns don't.

Ambie more or less hit it how I'm writing it. In this continuity, Starfleet is basically drilled to have the attitude of "No matter how bad it gets, you take it unless it turns physical." The civilians, however, aren't taking to the culture quite as well.

Consider the terms of engagement for riot police deployed to a protest (or US/NATO troops facing one in Iraq/Afghanistan). So long as the protest remains verbal, there's no reason to move in and make arrests/attacks, but the moment somebody starts doing physical damage...

Of course, as the Intaran military tends to draw those with faster metabolisms, it's not so much of a problem amongst them...

Oh, just thought I should make it clear I wasn't just popping in to make a point, I'm actually enjoying what I've read of Citadel. I really should get caught up on what's going on.

No worries. The comments are useful. After all, without feedback, there's no way to improve... and no inspiration for future stories.
