I enjoyed the episode. I found it laughably heavy-handed, but amusing nevertheless.

Shouldn't social commentary be a bit subtler?

Then, again, it's for the ADHD generation.

Getting heavy-handed in your third season is somewhat more excusable than doing so in your sixth or seventh episode, isn't it?

There's just something a little disingenuous about how they're handling this whole thing. Parody enough to excuse any criticisms, but serious enough to be considered a pastiche.

MacFarlane's playing his hand well, here.

I can see this being reflective of a nightmare for Seth McFarlane.

His career could be severely damaged by making a public miss step and a public reaction akin to the mechanism he describes here.

So I can see him wanting to shine a light there.

Also, Mudd's Women. Ham handed social satire is part of the fun of Star Trek from the get go. Even Roddenberry referenced "Gulliver's Travels" as part of Trek's lineage.

And The Orville is Off-label star Trek.

I'm gonna say no, here.

It's not nearly so bad as this latest Orville, especially relative to the era.
